Discord revises age-verification rules, says AI will handle most users — Kotaku

Discord updated the language around its new age-gating rules after unveiling the requirements on February 9, posting an addendum on February 10 to clarify that the vast majority of users will not need to complete face scans or upload IDs because its AI can estimate age for most accounts.

The company says its age inference model will guess users’ ages and that estimates of 18 or older will allow access to age-restricted experiences without additional verification. The FAQ notes that users must be a confirmed adult to access age-restricted servers, channels, or certain safety settings, and that most users will never encounter the facial age-estimation or ID verification flows.

The announcement followed swift backlash: calls to boycott paid Nitro subscriptions, community notes on X, and concerns about ongoing data collection and a prior vendor hack that exposed age-verification materials.
