Nbc reports that Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), head of Gaffney's Psychiatry Department on Chicago Med, will take a brief leave of absence in upcoming Season 11 episodes.

The decision follows a stretch of episodes in which Charles experienced a panic attack accompanied by a nosebleed, admitted he had been tempted to retire, and teamed with newcomer Dr. Theo Rabari (Manish Dayal) to treat a patient who had been misdiagnosed for years. After helping that patient and checking in on Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) following the funeral of her ex-husband Bert Goodwin, Charles told Sharon, "I think I might need to take a couple weeks off," saying he had "some issues with my antidepressants" and needed to "titrate down, look for some other options."

When he will return is unclear; Chihards are rooting for a speedy comeback as Charles focuses on his health, and the rest of the Gaffney staff — including Dr. Theo Rabari — will hold the post during his absence.
