Dudamel to Lead Annual Operas at Carnegie Hall Starting This Fall
Gustavo Dudamel and the New York Philharmonic will present operas in concert at Carnegie Hall beginning this fall, the orchestra and the hall announced, as Dudamel prepares to become the Philharmonic’s music and artistic director in September. The Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall will collaborate initially for five seasons, with Dudamel leading an annual concert opera.
The first production, a two-night run in November, will be Puccini’s Tosca, with Marina Rebeka as Tosca, Jonas Kaufmann as Cavaradossi and Ludovic Tézier as Scarpia. Dudamel, who has not yet taken over until September, said the Carnegie Hall operas and a recent concert at Radio City Music Hall reflect a priority to encourage the orchestra to explore new neighborhoods and venues across the region.
He said the Philharmonic is keeping and enriching its park concerts and trying to connect with the cultural life of different neighborhoods. The Radio City program this week was a two-hour mix of classical works, show tunes and film music presented for an audience of nearly 6,000 as the hall debuted a new sound system.
Dudamel returned for multiple encores at that concert, including one with Bernadette Peters. Matías Tarnopolsky, the Philharmonic’s president and chief executive, said collaborations with other New York cultural institutions would be a “centerpiece” of Dudamel’s tenure; the Spanish Harlem Orchestra will join Dudamel and the Philharmonic at Geffen Hall in May.
