Movieweb reports Elijah Wood has teased his possible involvement in The Hunt for Gollum while addressing Ian McKellen’s comments that Frodo and Gandalf are characters in the film. Speaking at a Fan Expo New Orleans panel moderated by ScreenRant, Wood said he could not "confirm or deny" and added, "Listen, a wizard is to be trusted."

Wood described the project as a creative reunion, saying it felt like "getting the band back together," and expressed excitement for Andy Serkis to direct. Writer-producer Philippa Boyens is reported to be co-writing and producing, and Boyens told Empire the film is an "adventure story with a really strong psychological, interior story"; she also noted mo-cap work with Serkis. The project is in pre-production in New Zealand, with principal photography set to begin later this year, and is currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.

Wood’s remarks stop short of a formal casting announcement, and the studio is reportedly looking at actors to play Aragorn, replacing Viggo Mortensen. With Frodo and Gandalf confirmed as characters, further news about returning cast and production developments is expected as the film moves toward shooting.
