Ella McCay Fades on U.S. Streaming After Weak Theatrical Run — Collider

Ella McCay, the James L. Brooks-directed political dramedy that reached streaming on February 5, has seen mixed results after a poor theatrical showing. The film, which features Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri and Kumail Nanjiani, earned roughly $4.0–$4.6 million worldwide against a reported $35 million production budget.

Critics and audiences were lukewarm, with a 23% critics score and 57% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.1/10 on IMDb. The opening weekend generated $2.02 million, and that lackluster box office usually presages a faster post-launch decline unless streaming placement finds a steady audience.

On streaming, the picture has been uneven. Ella McCay reached #1 on Disney+ in 23 countries on February 12 and in 22 countries on February 13 (the U.S. was not included). By February 18 it ranked #9 on Disney+ worldwide via FlixPatrol, while U.S. viewers have kept it higher on Hulu, where it sat at #5 on the movie chart after briefly hitting #1 on February 12.
