England and Scotland matches at Gillette Stadium face uncertainty
Local Foxborough authorities have given FIFA less than four weeks to settle a £6m payment to cover manpower and infrastructure at Gillette Stadium outside Boston. Without that payment the town says it will not grant the stadium licence and all seven matches scheduled at the 66,000-capacity venue face being moved.
There are 112 days until the World Cup’s opening game on June 11. Foxborough officials say the funds are needed to secure the facility for 39 days and to purchase needed materials, and Select Board head Bill Yukna warned the licence will not be granted if the costs are not met.
The Kraft family, owners of the New England Patriots, have declined to cover the £6m, leaving the issue unresolved. FIFA’s World Cup 2026 Director of Venue Operations, Kevin Clark, said the financial agreement is a matter for the stadium and the host city and that the governing body is not in a position to comment on the financial requirements.
