Eric Lu offers mature readings of Schubert's Impromptus
Pianist Eric Lu's new recording of Schubert's eight Impromptus, Op 90, follows his release of the late sonatas late in 2022 and presents a rewardingly mature, un‑egotistical approach. Lu was described as a worthy if controversial winner of the Chopin international piano competition in October, having won the Leeds event seven years ago.
The review says Lu is attuned to the way Schubert creates overarching structures, conjuring a mesmerising feeling of stasis while keeping the music alive with detail beneath the surface. In several performances, time "really does seem to stand still," and from the lonely opening of Op 90 No 1 he draws the ear with the scope of his phrasing: his playing can be weightier than some, but his lines go on into the distance, corners are smoothly turned, and dramatic passages grow out of what has come before.
While the performances may not yet be quite distinctive enough to make this recording the top choice in a crowded field, the reviewer says they back up the Chopin judges' decision that Lu is a serious talent.
