Erling Haaland’s opener and Rayan Cherki’s second before half-time secured Manchester City a victory over Galatasaray and a place in the Champions League last 16. Haaland scored for only a second time in eight matches when he ran on to Jérémy Doku’s defence-splitting pass and chipped goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir.

Cherki doubled the lead after Doku cut in from the left and squared for the striker to finish in space. The evening had a sour note when Doku was forced off after a tussle with Davinson Sánchez on 36 minutes; Guardiola said: "I think so. He is a calf [problem] – he felt something." Guardiola also said: "The first half was better than the second.

Really pleased. Hopefully we can arrive in March for the next round at our best." City’s automatic qualification was helped by Benfica’s 4-2 win against Real Madrid, a result sealed by Anatoliy Trubin’s 98th-minute header. Guardiola said the dressing room had been transfixed by the finish at the Estádio da Luz and added: "We were all there so we didn’t know Benfica needed a goal to qualify so when the goalkeeper goes up, we say: ‘Why you go?’ But it was a good strategy for José." Manchester City will draw one of Real Madrid, Inter, Bodø/Glimt or Benfica as their last-16 opponent.

The draw is scheduled for 27 February and City are guaranteed to be at home in the second leg. What is known: City have reached the last 16 and the draw date is set.
