Julie Inman Grant, the eSafety commissioner, said global regulatory focus on X reached a "tipping point" after a raid on the company’s offices in France that was part of an investigation into alleged offences including possession and organised distribution of child abuse images, sexualised deepfakes and denial of crimes against humanity.

Several countries and the EU have opened inquiries after reports that X’s AI chatbot, Grok, was used to mass-produce sexualised images of women and children; following the outcry X limited Grok’s image generation to paid users and said it would make changes to prevent the declothing of real people.

Inman Grant said it was positive to be "part of a choir" of regulators and researchers, and her office’s latest report examines how platforms are preventing child sexual abuse and exploitation.
