Even Star Wars Did Better Than Rebecca Ferguson’s New Sci-Fi Release
Mercy opened to poor reviews and has stalled at the box office after a disappointing debut and a hefty second-weekend drop. The film earned a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes and was released in January — a slot typically reserved for movies that studios don't have much faith in, a suspicion Amazon MGM ultimately proved correct.
Made on a reported $60 million budget, Mercy has earned $22 million domestically and less than $50 million worldwide so far. It would have needed roughly $120 million globally to break even, and there is a real chance it could fall short of even recouping its $60 million production cost.
The film will make a final push for the $60 million milestone at the global box office, perhaps primarily to save face. The gap between Mercy and past tentpoles is stark: it has grossed only one-tenth of the least successful live-action Star Wars movie domestically — Solo: A Star Wars Story, which made just over $200 million in the U.S.
