Every Stanley Kubrick Movie Based on a Book, Ranked
Stanley Kubrick was a British-American filmmaker responsible for some of the greatest films of all time. He had a complicated legacy: he revolutionized cinema, yet his methods were known to be harsh and demanding. Over his life he produced 13 films, of which 10 are based on novels, and this list ranks those book-to-film adaptations (2001: A Space Odyssey is excluded because it is only inspired by short stories).
At the lower end of the list are films that have aged unevenly. Lolita, based on Vladimir Nabokov's novel, remains difficult to watch because of its subject matter and is often seen as one of Kubrick's least approachable works. Eyes Wide Shut, released posthumously and Kubrick's return after a 12-year hiatus, adapts Arthur Schnitzler and shifts into erotic and psychological territory, while Barry Lyndon, adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray and set during the Seven Years' War, is visually accomplished but not as thematically dense as some of his other films.
