Ex Machina climbs HBO Max streaming charts after 10th anniversary
Collider reports that Ex Machina is rising up the streaming ranks after its 10th anniversary; according to FlixPatrol the film was among the most-watched movies on the domestic HBO Max charts this week, when the leaderboard was topped by Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another.
The 2015 film — Alex Garland's first collaboration with A24 — starred Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander, earned Garland a Best Original Screenplay nod at the Oscars and won Best Visual Effects; it also received five BAFTA nominations including Best Supporting Actress for Vikander. Produced on a reported budget of $15 million, it grossed nearly $40 million globally. The story follows a computer programmer who is invited to the remote home of a tech CEO, where he meets a humanoid robot powered by AI, and the film sits at a "certified fresh" 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Ex Machina leans heavier on ideas than effects, but it's still a visually polished piece of work -- and an uncommonly engaging sci-fi feature."
Garland went on to direct Annihilation before embarking on a three-film ride with A24 that includes Civil War, Men and Warfare; he is now directing a live-action Elden Ring film and penning the third installment of the 28 Years Later series. You can watch Ex Machina at home.
