In this week’s episode of Fallout Season 2, “The Handoff,” The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) finally reaches the Lucky 38 and is greeted by Robert House (Justin Theroux), a development that has prompted fans to suggest the show may be leaning toward the Fallout: New Vegas ending where Mr.

House survives. Collider notes that Mr. House only survives in New Vegas’ “The House Always Wins” ending; in the other game endings he dies. In that game outcome the Courier secures the Platinum Chip, upgrades New Vegas’ defenses and allows House to continue ruling the city, albeit with limits absent cold fusion.

Hints appeared earlier in Season 2’s Episode 3, “The Profligate,” when the Ghoul meets Victor, one of House’s former Securitrons, and argues against Victor’s claim that House is gone — suggesting House would have prepared for every outcome. The series shows what appears on screens is a digital avatar while House’s actual body is frail and kept in a secret survival chamber that must not be opened.

Co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet told EW that the series wanted to avoid picking a canon New Vegas ending, but clarified the Mr. House seen in the show “may not be the same one from the game, but ‘a version of himself powered by cold fusion’ as ‘the ultimate possible incarnation of Robert House.’” That explanation, Collider says, raises further questions rather than settling them.
