Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are in the final stages of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake and have announced a Steam demo for March 5 and a full release on March 12, PC Gamer reports.

PC Gamer's writer said Fatal Frame 2 remains one of the scariest horror games he has played, and highlighted the series' Camera Obscura mechanic — a tool that forces players to stay still and photograph ghosts rather than use traditional weapons.

Team Ninja says the remake overhauls camera upgrades with reversion beads to allow different upgrade paths and introduces new "Special Shots" tied to camera filters. The Paraceptual Filter activates a "Blinding" shot and the Radiant Filter activates a "Purging" shot that sacrifices some willpower for increased damage, the article notes.

The remake also adds a photo mode that lets players take screenshots and layer visual effects, and it includes a Silent Hill collaboration that will deliver free downloadable costumes after launch.

The demo releases on Steam March 5, with the full game arriving one week later on March 12.
