Find and smelt thorium in Hytale's Howling Sands

Polygon reports that in Hytale, thorium — the next tier above iron weapons, armor, and tools — is primarily found in the Howling Sands desert zone.

Map layouts differ for every player, so zoom out to locate arid, sandy areas; the Howling Sands is considered the second zone and exploring it requires good gear to handle enemies that spawn there. Thorium is most commonly found in cave systems: look for small circular openings on the map and then rectangular green stones sprouting from the ground, walls, or ceiling. Any tier of pickaxe, from crude to copper, can mine thorium, and nodes can sometimes be found on the surface near the tops of the highest mountains, though surface nodes are less common.

To make thorium ingots, place thorium ore in a furnace and smelt it using wood or coal—no special fuel or higher-tier furnace is required. To craft thorium weapons, armor, and tools you must first upgrade the blacksmith's anvil, armorer's workbench, and workbench to tier two.
