Find softwood in Hytale by cutting beech and aspen trees

Polygon reports that softwood in Hytale is obtained from beech and aspen trees found in the Emerald Wilds, the game's first zone, particularly around the Drifting Plains and Seedling Woods.

Beech trees are described as having dark brown trunks and vivid green leaves, while aspen trees are off-white with lighter brown specks and orange leaves. If you have trouble spotting them, look for the orange-topped trees on the in-game map. To harvest, take an axe and chop the bottom block — the whole tree will come down.

Softwood is required to upgrade the farmer's workbench to tier two, and logs can be turned into planks at the builder's workbench to make decorative blocks such as stairs, wardrobes, and doors. Guides for other resources like azure logs, cobalt, and thorium are also available.
