Fisk sophomore Andre Bell, 20, killed in shooting on Nashville interstate
People reports that Andre Bell, a 20-year-old sophomore at Fisk University, was fatally shot on the I-65 north highway at the I-40 interchange in Nashville on Sunday, Jan. 11. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said Bell, who studied Business Administration and played on Fisk’s basketball team, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Monday, Jan.
12. MNPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating and called the motive undetermined. Investigators say Bell and two friends had been at a gymnastics event at the Nashville Fairgrounds and were returning to campus in Bell’s white Nissan Sentra when a dark sedan pulled up in the left lane; the friends reported being distracted by their cellphones when they heard multiple gunshots and realized Bell had been hit.
The Sentra slowed, spun back into traffic and struck a red pickup truck while the dark sedan continued on, and evidence suggests the shooter’s car may have windshield damage from shattered glass at the scene. Bell suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Fisk said the athletics community is devastated and that Bell had been volunteering at the gymnastics meet before the shooting; counseling is being provided for the team.
