British police released Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, on Thursday evening after taking him into custody for several hours, deepening a long-running crisis over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The detention was unprecedented in modern times for a member of the royal family; the last comparable event dates to 1649, when Charles I was executed.

Authorities said he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office but provided no further detail. Thames Valley Police, which is carrying out the inquiry, later said "the arrested man has now been released under investigation." The arrest followed reports that, while serving as a British trade envoy, he may have shared confidential information with Epstein.

Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor has denied wrongdoing. His representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and under British law suspects are often released after questioning but may later be charged.
