Frozen tater tot taste test: Alexia Foods ranks first
Businessinsider taste-tested frozen tater tots from six brands — Sonic, Signature Select, Ore-Ida, Alexia Foods, McCain, and Cascadian Farm — buying the most basic flavor from each and following each package's cooking instructions.
Sonic's tots were crispy but lacked additional flavor, while Ore-Ida delivered the crispiest texture yet felt underseasoned. Cascadian Farm's organic spud puppies were a lighter, less greasy take with decent crispness but an underwhelming taste.
McCain's quick-cooking tots were less crispy and carried a hint of onion that reminded the tester of a latke. Signature Select's round, flat tots were crispy and evoked cafeteria tots but were somewhat plain.
Alexia Foods' crispy seasoned potato puffs, with flavors listed on the packaging as roasted garlic, cracked black pepper, sour cream, and chives and baked at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 18 minutes, were judged crispy, herby, and the best in taste and texture, ranking first.
