Gentoo begins move from GitHub to Codeberg over Copilot — Pcgamer

Gentoo Linux has begun a long transition away from Microsoft's GitHub to Codeberg, the open-source git-hosting service run by the Berlin-based non-profit Codeberg e.V.

The project said the migration of its mirrors is happening "mostly because of the continuous attempts to force Copilot usage for our repositories."

Gentoo now has a presence on Codeberg, and contributions can be submitted for the Gentoo repository mirror at https://codeberg.org/gentoo/gentoo as an alternative to GitHub. The move is not a single cutover for a project as large and complex as Gentoo, but the start of a lengthy process.

Known for its complexity—largely because users traditionally compile software from source—Gentoo remains a venerable distribution with a sizeable community and was the basis for the ChromiumOS project from which ChromeOS was derived. If the project is prepared to shift away from GitHub over Copilot, it suggests others may follow.
