Fans of Gerard Butler may know him from action roles and higher-profile sci-fi like Greenland and Geostorm, but he has also appeared in lesser-known genre entries. One of those is Timeline, a 2003 adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1999 novel directed by Richard Donner and written by Jeff Maguire and George Nolfi.

The film follows a team of present-day archaeology and history students sent back to 14th-century France to rescue their professor amid a bloody battle between France and England; Butler plays Scottish archaeologist André Marek opposite the late Paul Walker, with Frances O'Connor, Rossif Sutherland and Billy Connolly among the cast.

Released on November 26, 2003, Timeline struggled both commercially and critically. It grossed $19.5 million in North America and $24.4 million in other territories for a $43.9 million worldwide total against an $80 million budget.
