Sony announced and immediately released God of War Sons of Sparta on Feb. 12 during its State of Play showcase. The side-scrolling prequel surprised many players, and the early critical response has underscored a common complaint about surprise launches: they can leave consumers and creators alike frustrated.

On Metacritic the game sits at a 66 from 32 reviews, making it the lowest-rated God of War entry in the series’ history; the user score is roughly 6.4 from just over 500 reviews. Critics have been lukewarm: John-Paul Jones at PlayStation Universe called it “well-crafted if unambitious” (7.5/10), Jarrett Green at IGN described a “pleasant character rehabilitation” but otherwise a “pretty mediocre metroidvania” (6/10), and Oscar Taylor-Kent at GamesRadar found the combat “dull and lifeless,” saying the game falls short of the benchmarks set by both the Metroidvania genre and the God of War canon.

Price and return policies matter here.
