Golden Globes red carpet signals return of staid black suits
The Golden Globes red carpet appeared to favour conservative black tailoring this year, a mood signalled by Timothée Chalamet’s arrival in an all-black ensemble rather than the orange some had expected. Chalamet wore a black T-shirt, vest, jacket and Timberland boots with silver buttons by Chrome Hearts, and a five-figure Cartier necklace; Kylie Jenner was not present.
Styled by Taylor McNeill, the outfit was described in the coverage as a “bad boy Bond” look and helped set a subdued tone for the evening. There were exceptions: Bella Ramsey wore a Prada suit tied with a pink bow, Odessa A’zion chose a monochromatic trouser suit with a vintage Dolce & Gabbana jacket, and Miles Caton appeared in a chestnut pinstripe Amiri suit.
Yet many men, including Jacob Elordi, Colman Domingo and Jeremy Allen White, stuck with contemporary twists on traditional tuxedos, while women largely favoured dark shades — examples cited include Aimee Lou Wood in Vivienne Westwood, Teyana Taylor in Schiaparelli and Ayo Edebiri in Chanel.
Notable pops of colour included Elle Fanning in metallic Gucci, Emily Blunt in white Louis Vuitton and Amanda Seyfried in white Versace; Wunmi Mosaku wore a canary-yellow bespoke gown and veil by Matthew Reisman, writing in Vogue, "In Yoruba, we say Iya ni Wúrà which means ‘mother is golden’." The Globes’ red carpet is often treated as a dry run for the Oscars and a preview of fashion trends.
