Gothic 1 remake launches June 5 with ambitious overhaul
Over five years after its announcement, the Gothic 1 remake will arrive on June 5. THQ unveiled the date in a new trailer that also showed more of the RPG in action. The overhaul of Piranha Bytes' lovably janky game is billed as featuring a "complex life simulation on a scale hardly ever seen before." Developer Alkimia Interactive appears to have taken on board feedback from last year’s demo, which faced heavy scrutiny and was followed by a substantial update.
One writer says they are more interested in this remake than in Oblivion Remastered, noting Gothic is harder to return to now and seems to hold genuine untapped potential even though the two originals released only six years apart. THQ also claims the remake will include ambitious quest design that reacts to player choices, NPCs with daily routines and ambient wildlife.
Alkimia is a first-time studio, and that sort of overambition contributed to the original Gothic’s flaws; still, the project includes veteran Gothic talent such as writer Mattias Filler.
