Protests erupted in several Greenlandic cities and in Denmark as President Trump intensified his efforts to take control of the Arctic island, with hundreds gathering in Nuuk on Saturday and Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leading a march through the capital. Demonstrators in Nuuk waved Greenlandic flags, carried hand-painted signs reading “No means no,” “Greenland Is Already Great” and “Yankee, go home!,” and at times openly wept as Mr.

Nielsen climbed onto a snowbank to raise a flag. Organizers said people from across the island joined rallies in Aasiaat, Qaqortoq and Ilulissat, while protesters in Copenhagen marched from City Hall Square to the U.S. Embassy with signs of solidarity for Greenland. The protests followed a diplomatic effort in Washington in which Denmark’s and Greenland’s foreign ministers met Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

After that meeting the White House said talks would move into a phase focused on the “technicalities of acquiring Greenland,” a characterization Danish and Greenlandic officials rejected, saying instead that they had agreed to continue discussions aimed at addressing American security concerns without a takeover.

On Saturday, Mr. Trump announced he would impose new tariffs on Denmark and several other NATO countries unless they relent.
