Grey's Anatomy Halts Production Jan. 30 as Crew Join Nationwide Anti-ICE Protests
According to Deadline, production on Grey’s Anatomy was halted on Jan. 30 after crew members did not show up for work as part of nationwide anti-ICE protests following last weekend’s shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
MovieWeb reports the long-running ABC medical drama shut its doors when it was revealed crew would participate in the demonstrations rather than report for filming.
The protests were called by student groups from the University of Minnesota. MovieWeb names the UMN Somali Student Association and Black Student Union as two prominent groups behind the action.
The collective’s website reads: “The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN. On Friday, January 30, join a nationwide day of no school, no work and no shopping. Vote NO to ICE funding.”
Several celebrities, including Pedro Pascal and Ariana Grande, shared posts linked to the public protest, which MovieWeb says has spurred additional interest in the movement. MovieWeb also says the “National Shutdown” could end up impacting other TV and movie filming schedules on Friday and that it will monitor and update on developments.
Deadline said filming on Grey’s Anatomy and any other postponed shows and films is expected to recommence on Saturday; it remains unclear how many other productions, if any, will be affected.
