Grookey Community Day set for Jan. 18; evolve window grants Frenzy Plant

Polygon reports that Pokémon Go will hold a Grookey Community Day on Sunday, Jan. 18 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time, with increased Grookey spawns and a higher chance to encounter shiny Pokémon. As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine), shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, and players can use Incense and quickly tap to check Grookey for shininess (tapped Grookey will face where your player is standing).

Active bonuses during the event include tripled Stardust for catching Pokémon, doubled candy for catches, a doubled chance for level 31+ trainers to get XL candy from catches, Incense lasting three hours, Lure Modules lasting one hour, Grookey special photobombs for snapshots, one additional special trade, and halved Stardust cost for trading.

Players who can Mega Evolve Venusaur, Sceptile, or Abomasnow—or use Primal Reversion on Groudon—will gain additional Grookey Candy per catch. If you evolve Thwackey into Rillaboom on Jan. 18 from 2-9 p.m. local time it will learn the charged move Frenzy Plant; if you miss that window you will likely be able to get Frenzy Plant during a Community Day weekend in December, or you can use an Elite TM now.
