Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes reimagined the iconic detective as a bare-knuckle-boxing, drug-addicted figure played by Robert Downey Jr., a reinvention that left purists aghast and divided critics. The response was sharp: Robbie Collin dismissed the film as an "all-fumbling, all-bumbling, all-trundling crock of crud," while Mick LaSalle wrote, "Guy Ritchie is the worst screenwriter in the world, but, to be fair, he is not the worst director.

He is only the worst director of the people who actually get to make movies." Despite the hostile reviews, the 2010 release was a major commercial hit, grossing more than $520 million worldwide against a reported $90 million budget and spawning the sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The film has since found new life on home platforms: FlixPatrol shows it charting on Amazon Prime domestically, and it is available on PVOD.
