Dietmar Hamann has told Liverpool to consider a move for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire this summer, saying the centre-back could be available on a free when his contract expires and United have yet to open talks over an extension, Hamann told CasinoBeats. Hamann pointed to Maguire’s recent performances — the defender has impressed against Manchester City and Arsenal under interim boss Michael Carrick — and argued Liverpool need greater depth across the backline.

“You’ve got to give it to Harry Maguire because he got so much stick in the last few years and he always comes back,” Hamann said, adding that if Maguire is available on a free Liverpool would “have to think about it” as they seek defensive reinforcements. Hamann also recommended more conventional targets, naming Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck, noting Schlotterbeck has one year left on his contract, has taken a leading role at Dortmund and is a left-footed option.

Liverpool have struggled defensively this season, conceding 32 goals in 21 Premier League games and sitting sixth, two points behind Manchester United in fourth and 14 behind leaders Arsenal. Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has warned manager Arne Slot could be at risk if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League, telling Sky Sports that the side struggle with set-pieces, counter-attacks and low blocks.
