Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40,000 series moves into early development
Movieweb reports that Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40,000 adaptation is in active development after a lengthy period of negotiations between Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios. The show is expected to preserve the game's "grimdark" tone and is currently in early pre-production following an announcement in December 2022 and a July 2024 Games Workshop financial report that gave Amazon until December to decide on creative guidelines.
Cavill posted on Instagram that he, Games Workshop, and Amazon had agreed on the creative direction, and he later said in mid-2025 that he and a team of writers had been mapping out the first phase of the universe. Given the scale of required CGI and location work, a 2026 premiere now looks unlikely, with 2027 or 2028 described as more likely release windows.
Only Cavill is confirmed in the cast so far. He told Yahoo, "For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life." Rumors of Tom Cruise surfaced in 2025 but remain unconfirmed, and speculation that Gary Oldman might be involved grew after he was reportedly seen at Warhammer World.
