Horological Society of New York Marks 160 Years
The Horological Society of New York marks its 160th year and will celebrate at its annual gala on March 21 at the Plaza Hotel. The evening will include a lifetime achievement award for François-Paul Journe and an auction conducted by Sotheby’s to support the society’s scholarships and awards.
Gala co-chairs include Ben Ahlers, Danièla Dufour and Roger W. Smith. Founded on March 26, 1866, as the Deutscher Uhrmacher Verein, the group has used the name Horological Society of New York since 1930. For the past decade it has been housed in a former school building on West 44th Street, sharing a floor with other long-established membership organizations.
The society runs regular hands-on classes, from Horology 101 through 104, along with frequent lectures by watch brand founders, executives and experts. Classes draw a diverse mix of amateur enthusiasts and professionals; in one single-session Horology 101, six students worked at watchmakers’ benches equipped with tiny screwdrivers, tweezers and magnifying loupes.
