Hotels offer mocktails, wellness and activities for Dry January travelers
Hotels from Arizona to Switzerland are rolling out mocktails, wellness programs and alternative activities to attract travelers observing Dry January, the monthlong sobriety challenge. Properties cited include Civana in Carefree, Ariz.; Cervo Mountain Resort in Zermatt, Switzerland; Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y.; Hotel Belmar in Monteverde, Costa Rica; Rosewood Little Dix Bay in the British Virgin Islands; and the Grand Hyatt Vail in Colorado.
A recent Gallup poll cited in the coverage found that 54 percent of Americans say they consume alcohol, down from 64 percent a decade ago and the lowest level since Gallup began tracking alcohol consumption in 1939. Dry January began in Britain more than a decade ago and has gained traction in the United States, and hotels report seeing increased interest: “We definitely see an uptick in mocktail sales and just general inquiries about what the offerings are,” said Adam Lewis, the hotel manager for the rooms division at Grand Hyatt Vail.
Examples of offerings include Mohonk’s mindfulness-focused mixology class, debuting during a Mindfulness in Minutes weekend on Jan. 9 to 11, and a mocktail-of-the-month program; Cervo’s extensive mocktail menu and complimentary spa sessions from about 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., such as sauna infusions, steam peelings and guided “Ice and Breath” sessions; and Hotel Belmar’s weekly complimentary mocktail-making class using ingredients from its gardens, plus on-site kombucha and zero-proof beer.
