How In Living Color stole the Super Bowl audience
When the NFL named Bad Bunny as this year’s Super Bowl halftime headliner it sparked a culture war. Right-wing critics objected to his gender-nonconforming style, Spanish-language music and anti-MAGA politics, and Turning Point USA answered with an All-American Halftime Show led by Kid Rock and promoted by JD Vance.
In Living Color arrived on Fox in 1990 to fill an SNL blind spot. Keenen Ivory Wayans assembled a cast that mixed future stars (Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier) with Wayans family members (Marlon and Damon) and comic additions like Jim Carrey, while Jennifer Lopez began her career as a Fly Girls dancer.
During its first season a marketer, Jay Coleman, persuaded Fox to run a special episode opposite the Super Bowl halftime.
