ZDNET writer Maria Diaz outlines seven practical ways to use smart plugs to automate a home, from controlling devices via an app or voice assistant to scheduling and energy monitoring. Smart plugs can enhance security by automating indoor and outdoor lights while you're away and by cutting power to a garage door opener to block remote entry attempts.

They can also be tied to motion or occupancy sensors — Diaz describes using an Echo Dot's occupancy sensing with Alexa to turn bathroom lights on and off via a smart plug or switch. For climate control, smart plugs can run fans or space heaters on temperature triggers or voice command, letting you reduce HVAC use.

Diaz also uses smart plugs for safety with hot tools such as flat irons, soldering irons and hot glue guns, enabling remote checks and shutoffs. Smart plugs can limit screen time by scheduling TVs or cutting power to routers and gaming consoles, and many models offer energy monitoring so you can identify high-usage devices.

Diaz notes Wi‑Fi smart plugs still draw about 1–2 watts when off to stay connected, while Zigbee or Z‑Wave devices may draw as little as 0.3 watts idle. Making older devices smart is another common use: holiday lights, coffee makers and even router resets can be automated.
