How to use a VPN to play games early
We’ve all seen other players getting hold of new releases first and wondered how to join them. It is possible to get access earlier with a VPN, but success depends on your platform, the game, your location and sometimes your account details. It used to be easier to buy games from other regions, yet loopholes are closed continually.
Account restrictions, needing to buy currency valid in the target storefront, and digital stores blocking VPN users to protect region pricing are all things to consider. Platforms like Steam have been known to shut down accounts that jump between regions to grab cheaper games, although most games on Valve’s platform still launch globally at the same time.
The so-called “New Zealand Trick” exploits time zone differences: connect to a VPN or change your console/PC region, buy the game in that territory and download when it launches there. You usually must purchase from that region — you can’t pre-order in your home country then switch — and you may need a payment method and account location that match.
