How to Watch Free Live Television on Your Phone or Tablet — NYT > Technology

There are several ways to get live television on a phone or tablet without adding another paid subscription. If you already subscribe to a multichannel service such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV, Philo, Sling, DISH or Fubo, download that provider’s app and sign in; you can usually stream over cellular when you’re away from Wi‑Fi.

Amazon Prime Video also has a Live TV tab with hundreds of channels and a selection of free content that was consolidated from its former FreeVee app. Free ad‑supported streaming television, often shortened to FAST, offers live news, selected sports and library movies and shows with unskippable commercials and generally no credit card required.

Bigger FAST services include Plex, Pluto TV, the Roku Channel (which does not require Roku hardware), Tubi and Xumo Play; Samsung TV Plus is available on Samsung devices and LocalNow focuses on regional weather and headlines. Family sections appear on several services, and apps such as PBS Kids Video and Sensical provide free children’s programming.
