Kotaku says the early access release of Hytale is enjoyable but frequently feels like little more than a texture pack for Minecraft, and it launched this week for a minimum of $20. The reviewer highlights small but welcome differences — a two-block jump and the ability to mantle from four blocks below, slightly improved combat where enemies block, and prettier visuals — yet notes many direct overlaps.

Mobs and systems feel familiar: skeletons, big two-block spiders, zombies and even golems appear alongside goblins, Outlanders, Kweebecs and overpowered underground giant frogs, and the world includes a Void said to contain a Void Dragon. Crafting is far more bench-heavy than Minecraft, with many specialized workbenches required early on (and the convenience that chests placed next to benches are recognised), while inventory, chest and UI designs echo Minecraft closely.

The game is expected to add an Adventure Mode with RPG-like storylines, Alterverses, bespoke quests and a Forgotten Temple that teleports players to a hub with a statue that catalogs encountered mobs and unlocks crafting as you reach specified milestones. The reviewer says those additions would help Hytale stand apart, but expresses uncertainty about whether and how those features will arrive given the project's history — including being cancelled by Riot in the middle of last year and revived in November — and questions about development choices.
