Hytale hides: where to get light, medium and heavy hides (cows, horses, boars now medium)

To get light, medium, and heavy hides in Hytale you must kill animals — then turn those hides into leather at a tanning rack. Following Hytale’s Update 2 (Jan. 28), cows, bison, horses, warthogs and boars now drop medium hides instead of light hides, and the list of hide-dropping creatures has been expanded to include zones.

There are three hide types: light, medium and heavy. Very small or young animals (for example, mice and calves) won’t drop hide. Two pieces of unprocessed light hide can make a bedroll, but most recipes require leather, which you craft at a tanning rack. Build one from the standard workbench under the “crafting” tab: it requires six wood, three stone and three light hide.

Place the rack, add any hide to the input slot, and wait — no extra resources are needed to turn hides into leather. Before hunting, Polygon recommends crafting at least a crude sword to deal more damage, especially for medium and heavy hides. Light leather is used for iron gear, medium leather for thorium gear, and heavy leather unlocks cobalt, adamantite and mithril equipment.
