Hytale’s unfinished sandbox rekindles hope for the voxel RPG — Pcgamer

Cube World promised endless adventure but ultimately fizzled, leaving the idea of a voxel-based, procedurally generated RPG unfulfilled. What I wanted was a fantasy with the blocky worldgen that makes exploring Minecraft fun, combined with the structure and satisfying swordplay of a proper RPG.

Hytale reminds me of Cube World in its long development and lofty pitch, but unlike that title it already feels enjoyable. Combat has mostly slick animations and impactful abilities, dungeons are stuffed with loot and unique monsters, and the studio keeps patching in features like dinosaurs and necromancy.

Some systems remain WIP and adventure mode isn’t implemented yet, but the game’s vistas, encounters and promise of deeper systems make the horizon feel worth watching. Modding could be the bridge to the RPG experience people want.
