Independent Spirit Awards get a fresh vibe at new location

The 41st Independent Spirit Awards moved from its usual tent in Santa Monica to Hollywood’s Palladium, giving the ceremony a different feel. Emcee Ego Nwodim quipped "OK, budget!" and joked, "What a gorgeous day it is to be inside at an awards show, and how fitting for a room full of indie filmmakers… the only time y’all are getting sun is when you need it for b-roll." She also warned, "We don’t have a permit," saying the show might have to "scatter and act like y’all are waiting for the bus." Netflix was a big winner.

Its Train Dreams, which is up for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, took best feature, and director Clint Bentley and cinematographer Adolpho Veloso also picked up Indie Spirit awards. The film is also up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Original Song at the Oscars.

Rose Byrne won best lead performance for A24’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, while Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor was named best documentary.
