Movieweb reports producer James Gunn has said the upcoming Supergirl film "doesn't follow it religiously" with regard to Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The movie stars Millie Alcock as Kara Zor-El in her first solo outing after debuting in Gunn's Superman reboot.

Speaking on Variety's Award Circuit podcast (via GamesRadar), Gunn called the film a "space fantasy" and said, "It's based on the Tom King book, but it doesn't follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there." Director Craig Gillespie has also said he read Ana Nogueira's script before the comic and that the adaptation "is different" from King's book.

Some hardcore fans have been upset by those differences, and Millie Alcock has described Kara as a cynical, tough figure shaped by a dying world. It is known that David Corenswet will cameo and that their reunion includes dialogue in Kryptonian; Supergirl is due in cinemas on June 26, 2026.
