James Van Der Beek and wife renewed vows from bed days before his death

Two days before he died, James Van Der Beek and his wife renewed their vows from bed. Kimberly Van Der Beek said, "Our friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles and we renewed our vows from bed." She described the ceremony as "simple and beautiful and moving," and their friend Poranguí played "the most beautiful music," closing with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." A few close friends attended the renewal in person while others joined remotely over Zoom; it was unclear if their six children were present.

The couple married on Aug. 1, 2010 and welcomed six children. James, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023, died on Feb. 11 at the age of 48. Kimberly said, "He met his final days with courage, faith and grace," and added, "There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time.
