James Wan, co-creator of the Saw franchise, says he’s developing a new Saw project — described as the eleventh installment — and wants to return to the spirit of the original film, he told Letterboxd. Wan said this will be his first Saw project since 2006’s Saw III.

Wan described having “the freshest outlook” for the dedicated fandom and said he wants to “make it scary again” — not merely gory but “psychologically scarring, like what Leigh [Whannell] and I did in the first movie,” he said.

The original 2004 Saw introduced the Jigsaw killer, John Kramer (Tobin Bell), who traps victims in elaborate puzzles rather than using a traditional slasher approach. Wan said he and Whannell want to “recapture the spirit of that first film” and revisit Jigsaw’s philosophy — that he targets people who don’t appreciate their lives.

At the same time, Wan said he plans to honor what fans love about the series while doing “something fresh and new” to reach a younger generation that didn’t grow up with the earlier films. He noted there have already been many entries in the world, so the next movie needs to offer a different approach.

Wan did not provide a release date or further production details in the interview; Collider said to stay tuned for more updates about the eleventh Saw installment.
