Now that the Saw franchise is back in the hands of original co-creator James Wan, he told Letterboxd he plans to steer the series away from pure gore and back to the psychologically scarring tone of the first film.

"For me to finally come back to it, I feel I have probably the freshest outlook...with this next movie I want to hark back to the spirit of the first movie," Wan said, adding that his aim is to "make it scary again."

Wan emphasized he wants a Saw that is "not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie," and said he intends to "honor what people have come to love about the franchise, whilst trying to do something fresh and new."

He noted this will be the eleventh installment and said the series needs to "do something different in order to reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it."

The Letterboxd interview lays out Wan’s creative goals for Saw 11 but does not provide production timelines or release details for the project.
