Jason Statham's Shelter Gets 65% on Rotten Tomatoes Ahead of Jan. 30 Release
Jason Statham’s new thriller Shelter has debuted to generally positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, holding a 65% score based on 17 critic reviews as of this writing. The film, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, opens in theaters on Jan. 30, 2026. Shelter follows a former assassin protecting a young girl on a remote island and centers on Mason, a reclusive man living by the sea whose decision to save a girl from drowning triggers a series of violent events that force him to confront his past.
The runtime is listed at 107 minutes. Critic consensus so far points to an average, low-key action film with Statham in good form. Blur-ray.com called the film "not particularly memorable," but added it also isn’t "goofy like many of Statham’s recent releases, making for a slightly more interesting viewing experience." The Gate said the thriller "keeps things entertaining and refreshing by actually allowing its cast members to give well crafted performances amid some nifty action sequences." MovieWeb’s own review was among the least favorable, calling Shelter a "cookie-cutter genre picture" and arguing it is "dangerously similar in broad strokes to 2012’s Safe." The review also said, "In Shelter, his efficient and minimalist style is exactly what is not needed to tell a story that depends on two lonely people connecting on a meaningful level," and criticized the film for spy-movie clichés and "been-there-punched-that" fight scenes.
