Collider reviewer Nate Richard says Jason Statham’s new film Shelter isn’t the out-there spectacle of The Beekeeper but still delivers the goods, combining vigorous action with an unexpected emotional core. The review notes the film opens in theaters on January 30, 2026. Richard summarizes the premise: Statham plays Michael Mason, a former government assassin living in a Scottish lighthouse who becomes the reluctant guardian of a young girl, Jessie (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), after a storm kills her guardian.

Mason’s past resurfaces when former MI6 spymaster Steven Manafort (Bill Nighy) uses a surveillance system called T.H.E.A. to hunt him down, sending Mason and Jessie on the run while the new MI6 chief (Naomi Ackie) watches from her control room. The review praises the action, calling the opening rescue setpiece—Statham diving into a storm—genuinely impressive and noting creative kills, fistfights, gunplay, and a climactic showdown with an assassin played by Bryan Vigier.

Richard highlights Bill Nighy’s hammy villainy and says Breathnach is a pleasant surprise, bringing believable chemistry and heart to her scenes with Statham, while Naomi Ackie’s subplot adds little. Richard compares Shelter to earlier Statham vehicles, saying it borrows from The Bourne Identity and John Wick and lacks some of the personality of The Beekeeper, but argues it lands on a similar level to The Mechanic.
