Jessica Williams earns Emmy nods for 'Shrinking' as Season 3 begins
Jessica Williams, 36, who stars as Gaby on Apple TV’s comedy Shrinking, has received Emmy nominations for each of the show’s first two seasons and the series begins its third season on Wednesday, The New York Times reports. The Times describes Williams arriving at a Midtown Manhattan sewing class to learn embroidery; she picked a martini-glass pattern, said she wanted it “super, super dirty,” and tied off the thread with the help of Kristine Frailing and Fabian Salazar at the New York Sewing Center.
Williams’s path to acting included improv in Torrance, Calif., competitive college improv at Cal State Long Beach and four years as a correspondent on The Daily Show; John Oliver wrote in an email that “She’s just innately funny, and her instincts are so sharp.” She co-created the podcast 2 Dope Queens, which ran in two mini seasons on HBO and included guests such as Michelle Obama, and has had roles in projects including the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the Netflix film The Incredible Jessica James.
On Shrinking she plays an empathetic, effervescent psychologist whose wardrobe and stature help complicate the character. Showrunner Bill Lawrence said Williams was “flat-out funny” and that the writers adjusted Gaby to show more vulnerability when they saw what Williams could do; co-creator Jason Segel said her improvisations can move scenes “into something real and raw.” Williams consulted on casting Damon Wayans Jr.
