Collider reports that Hans Zimmer and his music company Bleeding Fingers Music will compose the score for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, and when a fan asked J.K. Rowling on X for her reaction she replied, “He’s a genius.”

Zimmer’s hire marks a notable creative shift as the franchise moves from blockbuster films to long-form television. The series, currently slated to debut in 2027, will adapt all seven of Rowling’s novels with each book receiving its own season, a structure the report says gives the composers far more room to develop themes and character-driven motifs. In announcing their involvement, Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman said, “The musical legacy of ‘Harry Potter’ is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude… With this score we hope to bring audiences that little bit closer to it whilst honoring what has come before.”

The report lists Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, Janet McTeer and Nick Frost among the supporting cast. It also names Francisca Gardiner as showrunner, Mark Mylod as director, and Francesca Gardiner among the writers. Rowling’s one-line response has already prompted discussion among fans, and the series is moving forward toward its planned 2027 debut.
