Justice Department Sues Harvard for Admissions Records
The Justice Department sued Harvard on Friday, accusing the university of failing to produce documents sought in an investigation into whether its admissions process discriminates against white applicants. The lawsuit is the second government action in two weeks after President Trump abruptly reversed his position on a potential deal with the school; the president later raised a previously discussed fine and the Defense Department severed academic ties.
The lawsuit grows out of federal inquiries opened last year into admissions at Harvard’s undergraduate, law and and medical schools, and follows a compliance review in April and a False Claims Act investigation in May. The government has demanded a broad set of records, including text messages, emails and other communications about the president’s executive orders on diversity, equity and inclusion.
