Kendrick Lamar wins Best Rap Album at the 68th Grammys
Kendrick Lamar won the award for best rap album at the 68th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, The New York Times reported. Bruno Mars and the K-pop star Rosé opened the ceremony with a performance of “Apt.,” Trevor Noah hosted for what the Times described as his sixth and final time, and Sabrina Carpenter performed “Manchild.” A vast majority of the ceremony’s 95 awards were handed out earlier in a nontelevised pre-telecast event, the report said.
The Times noted Lamar had already taken three prizes earlier in the day — best melodic rap performance for “Luther,” best rap song for “TV Off,” and best rap performance as a featured artist on Clipse’s “Chains & Whips” — and entered the night with nine nominations, more than any other artist.
The broadcast also featured a milestone for K-pop: “Golden,” from the film “KPop Demon Hunters,” won best song written for visual media, giving K-pop its first Grammy, the report said. Several stars wore buttons reading “ICE OUT” and spoke out about immigration enforcement; Gloria Estefan, after winning best tropical Latin album, called the situation “inhumane,” and the Times described onstage and offstage comments urging artists to speak up.
